Here is Stephanie & Lou Jacobs showing a map of the USA. Lou explained that people asked him where have they traveled in the past 51 years of camping(earlier campers, Argosy & Airstream). So Lou made this map of trips all around the USA. A few thousand miles??? If you click on above picture you can see some of the routes.This was cool to see all their routes and visualize the good old USA.

Dec.3,2011 We had our Central Penn Unit Christmas Dinner at the Park City Diner. We had a total of 19 persons attend. Lights, Woods, Barrs, Landvaters, Jacobs & granddaughter, Sanders, Olshefskis & grandson Theresa Davis, and the Obers. The dinner was hosted by Dennis & Carol Ober. Everybody ordered off the menu and enjoyed their selection. Door prizes were the Center pieces of flowers and little Christmas trees, won by Landvaters, Lights, & Jacobs. There was also little Christmas candles for each family as well as Hershey candy filled candy canes. We all gave our Christmas Wishes to all and left about 2 hours later.

Here it is October already!! Time to changing of the guard. Welcome Sue Bates as our new President. This is John her husband. She has alot planned this year for 2012. So, lets all get behind her and Volunteer to make her year a Smooth One!
The first activity planned was the Conservation Rally at Little Buffalo State Park in Newport,Pa. There were 4 airstream families there for a free campout inexchange for 2 days of operating the old fashion mill. We made corn meal and bagged it for sale. Also we ran the apple cider press to make apple cider for the public to sample. The place was busy both days with lots of visitors. The members helping were , John & Sue Bates, Felix & JoAnn Olshefski, Jackie & Carl Light, Audrey & Ken Kandvater and also Lou Jacobs came to help out Too! Maybe next year we can ask other units to join us for a fun and "Free" camping week. Contact Sue if interested.
The next dinner planned is December 3,2011 at Park City Diner( Lancaster,Pa.) at the Park City Complex across from the JC Penny Store. The dinner begins at 1:30 pm and you can order off the menu (Senior Prices Too) So Please Plan your Unit Christmas get together and mark this date. Call Dennis @ 717-572-8335 to reserve a spot by Nov 25.

April 27, 2011, The Airstream is packed and we hit the road at 9 am going up Highway Rt.283. Along the way we meet Carl & Jackie Light to travel together, our next stop is the Ranch House on Rt.15 above Duncannon. We meet the Bates, Jacobs & Davis there by 10 am. After a short hello and hugs, we are on our way.
Five of those silver Airstreams heading up Rt. 15 for Ives Run. I am the caboose of this Caravan bring up the rear and keeping everyone together. We stop at Lycoming Mall above Williamsport for a quick lunch at Burger King, then off we go.
We arrive at Ives Run and check in at 3 pm. Warning!! The rain has flooded a lot of the park, we may have to evacuate. So we are told not to unhook just connect to water and electric for now. It has stopped raining here, we never saw any rain today along the way. But the park has high water everywhere. The swing set has 3 foot of water and the Park pavilion has water up to the edge of it. The Olshefski's have been here since tuesday and are the Rally Hosts for the week. The Leitners arrive also and join us. We all get setup and gab the rest of the night.
Then it happened....Rain..Rain..Rain kept coming all night long 3 and 1/2 inches fell. We walked down to the swing set, it was covered and the pavilion had water all the way up to the roof. Wow.. That’s a lot of water. The trees even were covered half way up and the one bath house was under water. Here comes the Ranger with some bad news, the park was closing and we had to leave today.
The Koreny's arrived and had some suggestions for a new campground. They checked out the state park down the road but they were full, no room for 8 of us. After a few phone calls, we decided to go to Twin Streams Campground 10 miles south of Wellsboro.
We all checked out and met along the service road to stay together for a Caravan to Wellsboro. This was Cool!! Airstreams in front of me and following me too, 8 of us all connected by CB's and passing thru all along the highways. I would blow the horn to bystanders as we passed then they would wave and wave and wave to all of us. I guess they wondered where are they going?
We arrived at Twin Springs and check in, $28/nite full hookups and Cable Too!! Her comes the fun part .. the grass was wet and slippery, some of us got stuck trying to park. would you believe the ones with 4 wheel drive were stuck the most. The camp handyman brought gravel to put under the tires and everyone got parked.
Thursday night supper was prepared by JoAnn , Soup and sandwiches and salad too. The camp gave us a nice little cozy club house for us to use. It had a TV and Tables/chairs and even a counter for the Food Buffet as needed. This was a great asset for us to get out of the dampness and have fun.
After supper we played "65" card game till 9:30 then time for bed. PS. since we had cable some wanted to get up at 4 am to see the Royal Wedding, but if you slept in like I did, you can see the reruns all day.
Friday was a damp day but we made the best of it, with a drive back to Wellsboro for a downtown walk. We saw the Famous Wellsboro Diner, just an old fashion little diner but cool lookin'. Then off to the gift and Department stores also. The town has real gas lights along the middle yard of main Street, they look awesome at night.
On the way back to camp, I saw a wood carver along the roadside carving wood with a chainsaw. We stopped and took a tour. He had Big Foot, a Bear, Frog, Squirrel, Wild Duck & Otters on display. He showed us around inside and outside his work place, What Talent!
Back to camp, Time for Pot Luck supper. Ok!! we didn't starve this week either, there was plenty of food for everyone.
After supper, I ask Steve and Linda Koreny to talk about their past winter in Florida at Collier-Seminole State Park near Naples as workcampers at a State Park as Canoe guides and just all around experiences. You could have heard a pin drop as they spoke for at least an hour telling us the details. You could tell they Loved it!! They are returning again this winter for 6 months to help again in exchange for Free Camping, all they work is 20 hours a week(total per camper, 10 hours each=20 hours) "The three hour canoe tours were for the public to experience the wild everglades and its passages thru the water." They gave 2 or 3 canoe tours a week. Steve then told us about the animals in the Everglades.. Alligators and Crocodiles, we learned a lot about their habits and dangers of meeting them.
Sat, April 30, what a beautiful day, high in the 70's and sunny! We all loaded up and headed for the Penna. Grand Canyon. We arrived and walked all around the top and down the steps to various look outs to see the canyon below. We could see the river with canoes and Kayaks enjoying the water. Also we saw people on bikes riding the trail along the river. The trees still didn't have their leaves but what a sight.
Talking about bikes, did you know Steve and Linda rode for 3 days 18-20 miles a day while here? Well they did! They also had kayaks along but didn't have time to go, Bikes only!! They rode their bikes along the Pine Creek Rail-Trail which is rated as one of the top ten rail-trails in the country. A well planned, well maintained, beautiful trail, they rode along Pine Creek past many streams rushing down the mountains, crossed the river several times on old railroad bridges, past stone outcroppings with lichen, moss and ferns, through the gorge and also along farmland, deer crossed the trail as well as many birds from blue heron to red wing black birds and enjoyed our packed lunches including a thermos of hot tea as we sat on one of the many benches along the way.
Sat night we went to Wellsboro to Harland's for supper. We all ordered off the menu and some had the salad bar & soup.. Delicious. Back to camp for a campfire and more stories from Steve and Linda, they are great story tellers and was enjoyed by all. Sue Bates made smores for some and Burnt Marshmallows for the rest. Time for ZZZZ.
Sunday was overcast, we were thankful for the clubhouse to hold our get togethers. Time to eat again, We had Hot Dogs for lunch then for supper we had all the leftovers from the week...I am FULL!! and gained weight.
Tonight we watch a DVD movie on "Motorcycle Hogs" starring John Travolta & Tim Allen Funny.. Funny time together.
Monday May 2, Time to leave, we gather at 11 am to leave the camp and caravan home together (5 out of 8 left together) We drove for an hour then stopped at the Turkey Restaurant along Rt. 15 for a Turkey Menu, Great Meal, time also for a group shot too. Down Rt. 15 we go, one by one we drop off to our destinations till it was just Carol and I heading for Manheim.
Great Time, Friends, Food, and Sightseeing and doing all this with Airstreamers!! Central Penn Unit Caravan to Ives Run is Completed and in the History Books. Thanks JoAnn for being Host!! We Loved it and it turned out to be the Best !

This is the caravan to Twin Streams Campground, 10 miles south of Wellsboro,Pa. We found a camp that would accept 8 Airstreams for 4 days. Nice campground..full hookups and Cable TV too!

This is Thursday am, having a quick meeting on where to go? The lake is rising and we have to leave Ives Run.

What a beautiful campground at Ives Run. We got to spend a day here then we were asked to leave because of rising water.

This was a Caravan from Harrisburg to Ives Run. Jacobs led the way, then Davis, Lights, Bates and Obers followed along Rt 15. What a Beautiful Drive ................4 hours later we are at Ives Run.

This was the playground on wed at 4pm. The water is flowing fast and filling the banks.

Feb 25,2011, Friday, Here is the gang(Lights,Barrs,Buchers,Woods,Obers..missing was Jackie Meridith) at Land Yacht Harbor in Melbourne,Fl. We had a get together at "Obers" airstream, each brought their own supper and then we gabbed alot. We caught up on all the news. Lights arrived here at noon from Penna. They will be here a week then off to the Canjun Caravan. We are leaving here sat for Give Kids the World for a week. It was great to see everyone.

PORT ROYAL - George L. Settlemyer, 94, formerly of Port Royal, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at 5 a.m at Coble Health Care Center, Burlington, N.C.
Born Dec. 17, 1916, in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Clifton T. and Elizabeth (Thomas) Settlemyer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Koch) Settlemyer, who died Oct. 26, 2003.
He is survived by one daughter, Vera S. Barker, of Burlington, N.C.; one son, Clifton G. Settlemyer, of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
George was a Penn State County Extension Director and Agricultural Agent for 33 and a half years.
He was a 1934 graduate of Wilmore High School, Wilmore, and a graduate of Penn State University and University of Wisconsin.
He was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church, where he was a past council member.
He served as past president and past district governor of the Mifflintown Rotary Club. He was the former director of the Juniata County Industrial Development Authority; director of First National Bank, Mifflintown; first chairman of the Juniata County Planning Commission; past president of Pennsylvania County Agents Association; past local unit director of Wally Byrum Caravan Clubs of America and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, Dec. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal.
The service will be held on Monday, Dec. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Port Royal Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles L. Hershberger officiating. Interment will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to George Settlemyer Juniata County 4H Trust, c/o Trust Dept., First National Bank, P.O. Box 96, Mifflintown, PA 17059.

I know many of the older members remember George(and his wife Ruth) as very active airstreamers. I have so many great memories of George and Ruth(passed several years ago)They were a lively couple who enjoyed traveling!! Like the rest of us.

Her wit as an Elementary teacher
George had a very Active social life and lived it to the Fullest

Dec 4, 2010...Time for the Annual Christmas Party/Dinner. We all gathered at the Park City Diner in Lancaster, Pa. for a delicious meal. We all ordered off the menu from the senior menu..A large selection and also large portions were given. I think half the group ask for a box for leftovers..way too much food for only $7.99/8.99 cost.

Audrey was the Host, she made little silk bags/bells filled with a sample of chocolates. Also we had a big basket of candy for all to enjoy. The waitress even dug in and took handfulls for their treat. We had the "Best" Waitreses. The food was Hot and Fast for our table. We had a private room in the back to ourselves. We arrived at 1pm and left at 4pm. Audrey also had Poinsettas and a small christmas tree for decoration on the table. We had a long table for all 14 to sit at.

There were the Korenys, Landvaters, Olshefskis, Jacobs, Leitners, Obers, and Carl Light & Christine(Lou &Steph's grandaughter) at the Dinner. Good time by all..the Flowers were won by JoAnn Olshefski and Stephanie Jacobs & the Tree was won by Carol Leitner.

"Thanks SO MUCH" to Audrey for a beautiful set-up and hosting the Dinner!!!

Here we are at Little Buffalo State Park...Free sites inexchange for Volunteering at the Apple Festival. We are here for 5 days..cleaning the mill, making corn meal, bagging it too, making apple cider, giving out samples of apple cider & corn bread. A fun time for all. We had 7 rigs and 13 people volunteer a total of over 175 hours this week. They fed us lunch thursday and friday. We will be back next year for the fifth time!!! 3rd weekend in october.

Here is the Central Penn Members at the Installation Banquet/Rally. We had 43 members arrive on sat at Outdoor World"Dutch Country" Campground. Everyone was dressed up in colorful dress and shirts. What a festive time, The Buffet Dinner was made by Sue Bates with plenty of food for all.
Then Dennis Ober "Obie" was installed as the next President of Central Penn. He was installed by Ken Klinger assisted by Pat McFadden, Region 2 , 2nd Vice President. All others were sworn in too..Sue Bates 1st VP/ Secretary, John Bates & Lou Jacobs as 2 year directors, Carl & Jackie Light for 1 year Director.
After Thank-You's to JoAnn Olshefski for her hard work this past year and chairing the Pernn All State Rally Too! Gifts were presented to her, Past Pres. Flag, A DVD of "RV" and a Photo Scrap Book of the Members and All State Rally. All members signed her book with thank-you wishes.
Then Charlie and Fran Sanders showed their slide show of the Caravan to China in 1987 by Airstream...enjoyed by all.
There were 6 rigs at the campout for the weekend...A doggy roast was held by the campfire on Sat night. A long day..early to bed.

Koreny are out west in Idaho/Montanna Border

At the Idaho/Montana border we rode The Hiawatha Rail-Trail which was opened in 2001. The 15 mile trail has 10 tunnels, one of which is 1.75 miles long, and 7 trestles. At the bottom of the downhill trail, the bikes were loaded into a converted school bus; we were driven to the top where we then rode through the 1.75 mile tunnel a second time to our truck. Lights are required as the tunnel is pitch black darkness. The views along the trail were spectacular!.... The Korenys

This is the only double statue in the Gettyburg National Park. It is a New York Soldier and a Volunteer Fireman on the NewYork Stone base.

Here come the RED SHIRTS!!! We were well dressed for the All State Rally! Central Penn Unit were the Hosts this year at South Mountain Fairground. We arrived tuesday to set up and get ready for the rush wednesday. Wednesday, we greeted, parked, registered, hooked up, directed all Airstreamers to a Great Week. 43 rigs showed up this week, some for the weekend. The Gettysburg Tours were awesome and well planned by all. I believe that all enjoyed the area...Apple orchards, Biglerville Library, Cyclorama at the New Visitor Center,wine tasting at local wineries, evening entertainment, Ghost stories, German Band Rocks!!..World War 2 stories from a lady that lived in London as a child... Door Prizes for all..A great Saturday Dinner..also the continental breakfast all week..The Wine & Cheese Party was a hit too!...If you weren't there..You Missed a Great Rally..Just ask the Airstreamers that were There.

Aug. 14: Beautiful day for a ferry ride, stopped at Kake, Alaska, at 9:15, Petersburg, Alaska at 12:45, got off, had half hour and back on. Stopped in Wrangell at 5:45, got off again to see if the kids were there selling garnets, which they were, didn't buy any though. The kids can get them for free and the grownups must pay to get them, I guess this is his collage fund. Just sat around and watched where we were going, went through the narrows during the daylight, they didn't have a naturalist on board this trip. Went to bed about 10, had a nice smooth ride, docked at Ketchikan about 1am.
Aug. 15: Got up early, dock was full with ferries and catamoran, farther to the right was two cruise ships, pulled out of terminal at 7:15am. We had got back to Prince Rupert, British Columbia at 2:15pm, carpooled back to trailer, did laundry, went to grocery store and downloaded over 500 pictures onto computer.
Aug. 16: Slept late, went into town, I had ordered a shirt at a shop before we left, they were out of my size, they told me they would hold one for me when I return, so we went and picked it up. Didn't really do much this day, worked on pictures in computer, later in the evening we had a fish fry, four guys went fishing while we where in Sitka and they caught plenty of fish, decided to have a fish fry for everyone, really good, everyone contributed a side dish, had plenty to eat. After it was all cleaned up we had a drivers meeting, getting ready to move again.

Aug 12: Had a tour in the afternoon, boarded buses again, Sitka Tribal Tour and Comprehensive Cultural tour, they took us to see Mt. Edgecumbe Volcano, from a distance. Sheet'ka Kwann Community House to watch the Native dancers, drove past St. Michael's Cathedral, Russian Bishop House and Museum, St. Peter's by the See Episcopal Church, Sheldon Jackson Museum and then to Sitka National Historical Park, where we saw totem poles, rainforest and thousands of salmon spawning in the Indian River. Then we were off to the Alaska Raptor Center, where they help wounded birds of prey and release they back into the wild if possible. We saw bald eagles, osprays, owls and others, one of the girls brought an eagle out and talked to us about them, they can't release this bird because of its broken wing that won't mend right.
Aug. 13: We had got on one of the town buses to take a ride through town, the month of August is free which we didn't realize til we got on the bus, we had rode for half hour and then got on another bus and rode for an hour, people are very friendly in this town. We had a great ride, the drivers told us all about the area. Got off the bus and visited the Bishops house, using National pass. Went back to hotel, got ready for dinner at other hotel, had a buffet meal, back to hotel and then off to get ferry, left terminal 1am, heading back to Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

Aug. 10: Caught another bus, and off to Mendenhall Glacier, was a little disappointed with this glacier after what we saw yesterday, although it had two waterfalls, one along side of the glacier and one farther to the right. It was raining and we didn't wear our raincoats so we didn't walk to the waterfalls or got too close to the glacier. We did walk to see the bear across the road, after it quite raining. There was like a boardwalk along a stream and the bears come out and catch fish and eat them, we did see one black bear. After returning to hotel, we had walked down through Juneau and watched people and looked at the cruise ships.
Aug. 11: We caught another ferry at 8:15am, heading to Sitka, Alaska, we had arrived at 12:45pm. We had buses pick us up at the ferry terminal and took us to our hotel, we are in two different hotels, they couldn't accommodate us all in one hotel. We have had some people sick with vomitting and diarrhea, two went to the hospital, they only kept one, the other they sent back to hotel, they say they came down with a cruise ship virus. The guy the kept, was released the next afternoon, after getting an IV, we also had a lady fall on the sidewalk and broke her arm and dislocated her wrist, they checked her out and told her they couldn't do much there, so she flew home to Texas, she is to be getting surgery on Thurs. Aug.19, her husband has decided to continue on the caravan. We had walked through town, which is nicer that Juneau, not as full with people from cruise ships

Stop #11, Aug.7-16
Aug. 7: Checked in for the ferry at 7am, didn't leave until 8:15, we had 2 berth full facilities with window, which means 2 beds (bunkbed) with our own bath and a window. We had a naturalist on board, so we sat in the front of the ferry to listen to her talk about different sites and animals along the way. We had gotten off the ferry at two of the stops, Ketchikan and Wrangell, we only had about half an hour, so you didn't wonder too far. That night about 11pm the ferry was going through the narrows, which is a very narrow waterway that the cruise ships can't go through, there were green and red lights on the bouys, really neat to see. There was another stop later that night, but we went to bed, had a long day, I'm not sure if anyone got off at that stop.
Aug. 8: We had got off the ferry at 9:30 am, boarded a bus and got into the hotel at 10, our rooms weren't ready for us, so everyone put there luggage into an unused room and walked downtown Juneau, Alaska. We ate lunch at Red Dog Saloon, before returning to hotel to get our room. Juneau is a very quaint town that the cruise ships own, they own alot of the jewelry shops, 60 total, that's why they port here. That night we had dinner for all in the hotel dining area.
Aug. 9: We left the hotel the next day for a tour of Tracy Arm Cruise. This cruise was fabulous, it took us 2 hours to get to Sawyer Glacier, we had seen bald eagles, icebergs, waterfalls, seals, birds and more icebergs. While going to Sawyer Glacier, we had to go through icebergs, which was somewhat challenging, but boy when we got there it was beautiful. We sat there for quite sometime watching it calfing and listening to it cracking. We then left that area and went to South Sawyer Glacier, while on the way, we saw the most beautiful blue iceberg, here we saw harbor seals and saw this glacier calfing also, which means pieces falling off, and when that calfs the area is really blue looking. This cruise took all day and they furnished lunch.

Stop #11 Aug 5-6
On the road again, going to Prince Rupert, stopped in Terrace for lunch and then down to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The drive to Prince Rupert was very scenic, we drove along side the river with mountain passes, glaciers and very high waterfalls, with a very wide bed, saw an eagle perched on a rock. Stopped at an overlook and saw River of the Mists, islands with fog or mists floating above it, the temperature had dropped 10-12 degrees while coming through the mountain passes before getting to the harbor. Right before entering Prince Rupert, there was trees filled with shoes, very comical, next we saw two big cruise ships in port. Went back into town, with one cruise ship left, went through the shops, very nice tourist town.
Went to eat lunch at Mollie's, great seafood meal and then back to the North Pacific Cannery. Built in 1889, the North Pacific Historic Fishing Village is a National Historic Site. It is the most complete cannery that reamins of these remote villages that once dotted the West Coast. Most of the day was spent packing for our trip up the inside passage to Juneau and Sitka, which we leave tomorrow morning at 6 am. by ferry. We will be gone for 8 days, leaving our vehicles at the campground in Prince Rupert

Stop #10 Aug.2-4
Pulled out of Hyder, Alaska and started back down the road that we came up on four days earlier. Stopped at Bear Glacier again to ake a few more pictures, picked some dried flowers along side the road, they look like cotton. We had stopped in the Indian town of Kitwancool, took some pictures of totem poles, ate lunch and then continued down the road. We stopped for the next few days in Kitwanga, another Indian town, toward evening we went to Kitwanga Fort National Historic Site, totem poles and Saint Paul's Anglican Church to take more pictures.
We carpooled to 'Ksan Indian Village & Museum, we were all divided into two groups, a 'Ksan Indian guide took us into Froghouse of the Stone age building, which housed artifacts from the beginning of their heritage. Next we went into the Wolf House or Feast House, where they food was prepared, supplies stored and meals served. Then into Fireweed House, which is were they stored and made their costumes. Then into a building where they carve wooden masks and other items, watched some of indians working on masks. After leaving the museum, we drove into the town of Hazelton for lunch, the restaurant we were going to was closed, the other restaurant was full with other caravanners, so we ended up at a coffee shop, great sandwiches. Then off to the town of Kispiox to see more totem poles, they are all different and tell a story of generations, there are over 50 totem poles in the area

On Sunday, Ken heard about the bear at the dump, so we went and visited, saw the bear digging in the dump, which was smoking from a fire. The bear had burnt his paws, and walked away for a few minutes, saw us and walked around the front of our truck and all of a sudden he put his front paws on the hood of the truck. Ken quickly started the engine and he got down, leaving behind his foot prints. We've gone back twice since then, but no bear. Had a cookout for everyone tonight and then a drivers meeting

On Friday, we took a drive with another couple to see Salmon Glacier, which is beautiful and the fifth largest glacier in Canada and is the world's largest glacier accessible by road. The road going to the glacier was dirt, dusty and bumpy, but very scenic. We had driven to another glacier, and an old mine with train tracks, which went into the mountain for 11 miles. We had driven to a bridge which was posted not to cross and then the road stopped, had to turn around and back again, which was about 60 miles round trip. After returning, we drove back across the border to the town of Stewart, BC, saw two bald eagles sitting on a tree trunk along the water, which is known as Canada's most northerly ice free port. When we originally drove through the town, there was a ship at the dock, but was gone the next day. Stewart holds the Canadian record for snowfall 27 feet in one season.
On Sat., we got our bikes out and rode through Hyder and visited the shops that were open, only about 5. In the afternoon, we just sat around and talked to different couples, and then we went to the bus for dinner, there were 8 of us. The bus serves, locally caught fish, coho salmon and halibut, had a great fish and chips.

Stop #9 July 29-Aug.1
While traveling to Hyder, Alaska, we had stopped in the town of Moricetown, British Columbia, watched the First Nation (Indians) fishing with nets and spears. The area where they were fishing was at a canyon, with rapids and some fish ladders toward the sides. While watching they had caught two fish, measured them and put them into a big tub, 4 foot square and high, only the indians could fish this way. We then stopped again and looked at Bear Glacier, with waterfalls along side, and the river that follows. Crossed into Hyder, Alaska, without border security check, and right onto dirt road, no paved roads in this town. The campground is just off the road, camped on stones and rocks, a few sites under pine trees. At night, everyone drives to the bear viewing area, where there is a stream with coho salmon spawning, we've been two black bears and two grizzly bear catch fish and eat them.

Stop #8 July 27-28
While traveling today, we stopped in Vanderhoof, British Columbia at the Community Museum. This is the first year and they are still working at the Museum, but it was pretty nice for just a donation for admission. They had a trading building (bank), jail, cafe, gift shop, train, different farm machinery from the past. Saw a couple signs along the roadway for Giver A Yank, towing service, which I thought was really cute. Got to campground, one of the other couples on the caravan, decided to cook 3 pork loin and invited 3 other couples, great food, sat and talked til 9:45, still daylight, until a storm came through the area.
The campground that we are staying in has beautifull flowers planted every where, walked around this morning and then off to town, Houston, British Columbia. In town at the Information Center they have the World's Largest Flyrod, measuring 60 feet high, 800 pounds, reel 36 inches and fly 21 inches and is constructed entirely of aluminum and is anodized bronze to simulate graphite. At the center they also had Houston's Grizzly Bear mount, age 18-22 years old, 975 pounds and 11 feet standing, across the street they had a sculpture commemorating the outstanding accomplishment of local bull rider Rob Bell. He won the Canadian Championship in bull riding in 1999, 2000, and 2004. We then took a tour of the local Houston Sawmill, only 8 people could go on the tour at one time, we saw then unloading the logs off trucks, sawing logs, shaving logs, and the control rooms for the machinery. On the way back to camp, there was a bus selling fish, so we stopped and bought some smoked peppered salmon and smoked salmon bits. Had another GAM and a drivers meeting.

Stop # 7 July 24-26
Got up this morning early, at 5:30, and drove 9 miles on a switch-back road to reach Mount Edith Cavell Lake and Angel Glacier, hiked about 30 min. more and reached the lake and glacier. The lake was full of ice chunks that fell from the glacier, originally the glacier looked like angel wings, but has melted quite a bit and doesn't look like that anymore. Great walk, got back to trailer and pulled out by 8:40. Traveled about 237 miles today, to Prince George, British Columbia, stopping at two waterfalls on the way, Overlander and Rearguard falls, both are wide and alot of water running over the rocks, but not very long. Had a buffet dinner planned for all, great food, under new management, the cook came out and talked to us, some even went back the next day.
Next two days, we didn't really do much. Drove downtown, checked out the town parks, which there was quite a few, just to see the town. There were mall strips, Wal-Mart, Costcos, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Princess Auto, which we visited most. Our last night in Prince George, we had an ice cream social, root beer floats, for all, and then a driver's meeting.

Stop # 6 July 21-23
Left campground around 8:30, stopped for lunch at the highest point on Yellowhead Highway, you really could see for a long distance. Arrived at Whistler's Campground in Jasper National Park around 3 pm, later in the evening, we drove down to Athabasca Falls, this falls is to be among the most powerful and breathtaking falls in the Rocky Mountains. One the way back to camp, it was drizzling a little and we saw a very beautiful double rainbow. When we got back to camp, saw our first elk in the campground, a small female. It stays light here til after 10pm. and gets daylight around 4 am.
Drizzling when we got up to caravan to Maligne Lake, 2nd largest glacier lake in the world, took a boat tour to Spirit Island, a well known spot, which is seen alot for the advertisement for Jasper Park, tour was about 1 1/2 hour long and saw 2 glaciers. Jasper had a snowstorm last week, high enough to cancel Maligne Lake boat tours, for 1 1/2 days. On the way back to camp, we stopped at Maligne Canyon, which shows the power of water to scrupt rock, the canyon is 165 feet deep. At the canyon, there are 6 bridges, we had seen 5 out of the six bridges, the other one was too far away. We drove to Moberly Flats and saw 6 big horn sheep and then decided to take the Jasper Tramway, saw the vistas of six mountain ranges, glacial fed lakes, meandering rivers and the scenic mountain town-site of Jasper. Tramway is Canada's highest and longest aerial tramway as well as the only aerial ropeway in the Canadian Rockies, also had another rainbow on top of mountain before descending.
Next morning we had left and headed south toward Columbia Icefields, halfway to Lake Louise. Stopped at Goats & Glaciers lookout, but didn't see any goats, we had traveled not far down the road and saw a bear, road congestion, stopped and watched for about half hour before a ranger came and shot flares into the air to get the bear moving, he was busy eating berries. Continued on down and stopped at Sumwapta Falls, walked down and looked at falls as it rushed through a limestone gorge. Made a few more stops before reaching the icefields. We had decided to walk to the fields, longer walk than it looked, up a steep grade before arriving at the ice. On our walk, there were different markers showing how far the icefield was years ago, since 2000 it really melted quite a bit. When we got back to Jasper, we had time for a wood fired pizza, before our drivers meeting.

Stop #5 July 18-20
While driving on Sunday, we saw a den of coyotes, along the roadway, in all we saw about 8. We had
stopped in Vegreville, Alberta, to see the World's Largest Pysanka, (Easter Egg), it measures 25.7 feet
long, 18 feet wide, and stands 31 feet high, and turns in the wind like a weathervane. While there, we
had visited the visitor center and the girl behind the counter told us about the Train Station, which was
converted into a restaurant. There was 5 trailers that had gone there for lunch, they had served,
Ukrainain food, which had 5 perogies, 3 crapes filled with cottage cheese and a cabbage roll, which all
had a sauce of dill poured over them, wasn't bad. Our waitress gave us a tour of the station, while our
food was being prepared, they had a banquet room, and an upstairs apartment which was very nicely
done by the owner, which was an interior decorator. While driving to our next campground, we saw quite
a few fields again filled with canola flowers. On Monday, we had a tour planned for different places, but only did some of them because of rain.
We took a bus tour through Edmonton, Alberta, stopped at Alberta Legislature, Royal Alberta Museum,
which was a self tour, got to eat lunch at the cafe, and then off to the West Edmonton Mall. The Mall has
800 shops, 100 eating establishments, on 2 floors with them streets, amusement park, waterpark, putt 'n'
glow, 18 hole mini golf, ice palace, casino and much more. Mall covering 45 city blocks- that's equivalent
to 115 football fields. In the evening alot of us sat along the Saskatchwan River and watched huge
beavers and the deer across the road from our campground. On Tuesday, was a free day, we had got the oil changed in the truck and then back to the Mall, had a
drivers meeting in evening.

Stop #4 July 16-17
Travel day from Prince Albert to Lloydminister. Left this morning, driving on Highway 3 west, large area burnt out by fire, looks like a couple years old, pine trees are reappearing, still pretty small, we are traveling with Don and Kathy McKelvey. We then turned south onto Highway 40, passing by, the largest Lily in town of Parkside, driving through farmland with canola fields abundent. Canola plants grown in western Canada reach 1-2 metres tail and produce bunches of yellow, four-petal flowers. A canola field in full bloom looks like a huge, yellow carpet. Insects and wind fertilize canola by moving pollen from flower to flower. As plants ripen, the yellow petals drop off and green pods about 5 centimetres long take their place. The pods are about one-fifth the size of pea pods and contain canola seeds. When canola plants ripen further, the pods turn brown and the seeds inside turn from green to a range of yellows and dark browns. Canola growers harvest the ripened plants for those tiny seeds, which contain about 40% canola oil. Each pod contains about 20 seeds. The seeds are crushed to extract the oil. Canola oil is used in a range of food products from salad oil and cookies and cake mixes. Canola meal, the part that's left after removing the oil, is high in protein and used in animal feed. We had stopped at Information Center in North Battleford, took picture of Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a Buffalo made from barbed wire. We continued on Highway 40 to Cut Knife, in 1885 the town was the site of several First Nations uprisings that were inspired by the Metis rebellion. The Battle of Cut Knife Hill, between the Cree tribe led by Chief Poundmaker and the North West Mounted Police under Col. W.D. Otter, ended in the retreat of the Mounties to Battleford. Poundmaker, who stopped his warriors from pursuing and ambushing Otter's troops, later surrendered to the authorities to help restore peace between the First Nations and settlers. In Cut Knife's horizon is the massive tomahawk in Tomahawk Park. The handle is a pipe 57ft. long and weighs 8,660 lbs. Arrived at Lloydminister shortly after 2 pm., no sooner got unhooked and a storm with pea size hail came through the area, the rest of the evening was damp and drizzly. This morning, we went downtown and saw the North America's largest working sundial, as far as I could tell it was accurate. Proceeded to Highway 17, which is the line between Saskatchewan and Alberta, they have the world's largest survey stakes as border markers, so you can stand in both provinces at one time. Went to Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Center, the center features a museum with regularly changing exhibits, the Imhoff Art Gallery, a science center, a wildlife exhibit, as well as studio space where you can take art classes. Berthold Von Imhoff, had lived in Reading for a while and is known for his painting in churches. This evening, we had our first cook-out and drivings meeting.

Stop #2, July 11-12
I did laundry in the morning and then we drove downtown, across the Saskatchewan River, parked the truck and got our bikes out. There was a festival going on downtown along the river, we rode bike back across the river, where there was a walking and biking path, they also had a water area for the kids to play in and a skateboard park farther down the river. The weather was really nice this day and alot of people out enjoying the day. The next day, we went to Saskatchewan Western Developement Museum, 1910 Boomtown, it was like a street in 1914 to the turn of the century. It had a main street with different stores, like butcher shop, drug store, general store, dentist office, doctor office, livery stable, harness shop, blacksmith shop, church, school, railway station, and much more. They did have one room with tractors and farm machinery from way back when. Along the street where old cars, fire truck, horse and buggy, this was all under one roof, great find. For lunch we went to The Berry Barn, when we got there it was very busy, there were 4 other airstreamers there waiting for tables and one asked us if we wanted to sit with them, so we did, got to know them a little more. Lunch was very good, there specialty was berry pie for dessert, I had got a prairie berry pie, a little more tart than blueberries, the other woman go just a berry pie, and her's looked more like a blueberry pie, she also said it was very good. Went to an airstream dealer, didn't have much, then to Flying J for fuel and Costcos, before getting back to trailer.

Stop #3, July 13-15 Traveling day, July 13, we were parkers, so we left early and headed north to Princess Albert, Saskatchewan, arrived about noon, quickly made lunch and the other trailers started to pull in. Had another GAM, get acquainted meeting, from 4-5pm. Next day, July 14, we packed a lunch and drove north about 50 miles to Prince Albert National Park. We had stopped at the information center, got a few tips for the day. Drove to the other side of the info center, and parked our truck, got our bikes out and rode around town, nice paths along the lake. We then got back into the truck and drove to the marina, this area is not much more to see than being at home in a local park. There are no hill or mountains, mostly flat, pine trees and aspen trees, saw a couple beaver huts. We then proceeded south toward the trailer, on a different road than that we drove up on, the only thing we saw was a deer and a sharp-tailed grouse with its babies, and a few wildflowers, nothing out of the ordinary. A few in the group saw bear, elk, golden eagle, pelicans and deer. A few people in the group seemed to enjoy the area, but they were mostly from Texas area. July 15, we really didn't do much today, went to library to get on internet, went to grocery store. picked up a few items for the move tomorrow, fueled up the truck and back to trailer. We sat around awhile and talked to a group of people, Ken then washed the trailer, like everyone else did today, not too many places will let you wash you rig, so when you have a chance to do it, you just do. We then had a drivers meeting a 7:30, changed the roads we are traveling tomorrow. We've really had beautiful weather so far, 50's at night and 70's during the day, with a breeze blowing most of the time.

Thurs. July 8 The International is now over and we are in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. We had traveled north out of Gillette, Wyoming, through Montana and into Canada. We didn't have any problem entering Canada, although a few in our caravan were pulled over and their trailer was gone through. Before going into Regina we went west and stayed one night in the town of Moose Jaw, in a Wal-Mart parking lot, there was about 10 other trailers also parked there for the night. The next morning we got up, pulled the trailer next to another, unhooked and went down the road to the visitor center, where we found Mac the Moose, a 30 foot statue said to be the world's largest moose. We then drove downtown saw the McDonald's that was built like a barn and then took a tour of the Tunnels in town. There are two tours offered and we took the Chicago Connection, which explores gangster Al Capone's bootlegging operation, which was known as Little Chicago in the early 20's, and the tunnels he is said to have used to escape American authorities. Today we went to Saskatchewan Science Center where they were showing Our Body, The Universe Within, I believe this was at Harrisburg at the Whitacher Center, actual human bodies, is a scientific educational exhibit comprised of over seventy anatomical displays including nine whole body specimens that have been preserved using a method known as polymer impregnation, great exhibit and really interesting. We then ate lunch and then to the Imax theatre to watch The Human Body, also a great show. Two other couples and us went out for pizza, went to one place had a 45 min. wait, decided to try another, very expensive $50 for a large pizza, Ken got hamburger and I got french onion soup.
Fri., July 9 Had a tour to RCMP Heritage Centre (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), today, the centre was like a museum, with artifacts, from the beginning of mounted police to today. We then had a tour outside, walked to the Drill Hall, where we saw cadets practicing marching drills, then into the Chapel, which was a mess hall, early on, til the kitchen burnt out, then they made it into the chapel. Next we walked across the street saw a square where they put a show on three times a week. We also saw dorms, which house 16 people in one room, gym, and then a shed where they clean their guns. Later this evening we had a drivers meeting.
Sat., July 10 We had moved today to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which was 167 miles. The landscape was flat and farmland and no place really to stop along the way. We pulled into camp at 1:15, setup and by 4pm, we hosted our first GAM (get aquainted meeting), where 5 couples get together and tell everyone about themselves. At 5:30 we all carpooled to Saskatoon Princess River Cruise with dinner included. We returned back about 8 pm, you can't really stay outside too long at dusk, or the mosquites will carry you away, it was still quite light outside at 10 pm.

Mon. June 7 Pulled out of campground at 9 am and drove north into South Dakota. While driving we saw
pronghorns, Buffalo and prairie dogs, and a few deer. Stopped at Wind Cave National Park, took the 1
1/2 hour tour, called Fairgrounds, had to negotiate 300 to 450 stairs. This cave is different that most
caves, it has boxworks, popcorn and frostwork formations. They have explored 135 miles and expect
that this is only 10 percent of the cave, it is also the fourth largest in the world. We then drove into
Custer and found a campground for the next two nights.
Tues., June 8 Took a drive today, pasted Crazy Horse, were there before, so we didn't go in, looks like they have got
a little more done in the past 4 years. We then proceeded to the Needles Highway, past a rock that
looks like a needle and drove through three tunnels that were carved out of rocks. We then drove Iron
Mountain Road, where there was 4 more tunnels and hairpin curves. Drove north to Rapid City to visit
Mt. Rushmore Black Gold Jewelry Store, they give tours to see them make different jewelry (rings,
earrings, and pendents), it is also known as an outlet store. We've been past here two times before and
every time we stop and I buy a piece of jewelry. I then went and did laundry, yes I do have to do that
once in a while.
Wed., June 9 Left campground about 9 am. and entered into Wyoming at 10 am., this drive was a every scenic
route, a route that is not used very much. It was over hills that are grasslands, we had also passed a
Red Butte, a very tall hill that is flat on top and the ground going up the side is red, we saw alot of these
in the southwest. We had saw a few pronghorn anteloupes, all single grazing on the grasslands. We
had arrived at Devil's Tower National Campground around noon, while putting water in trailer, I saw a Bull
snake, scarey, Ken went and took some pictures of it, was about 3-4 feet long. We had setup camp,
have a great site can see the tower from our door and then drove up to the Devil's Tower, went into the
visitors center, saw they have a rangers walk tomorrow at 9:30, plan on going back tomorrow. Devil's
Tower is the nations very first national monument. It is actually the core of a volcano exposed after
million of years of erosion brought on by the Belle Fourche River and weather. The tower is 865 feet
high and around the perimeter, a distance of one and a quarter mile.
Thurs., June 10 Went for walk with ranger around base, took about 1 til 1 1/2 hours, talked about different trees in the
area, Indian's sacred ties to the tower, how and why they hang pieces of cloth around the tower. After
walk, we drove to Aladdin, a town with a population of 15 and a country store that someone told us to
make sure to visit, it wasn't worth the trip just junk. Had met a couple in campground that needed some
help with awning, Ken went over and helped them, this was their first time out with a motorhome, gave
them some tips. While sitting and relaxing, saw 4 turkeys in a distance, one gobbler with tail feathers all
fluffed (waiting to get lucky). Started to storm about 9:30, so we went to bed.
Fri., June 11 Left camp early this morning so we could arrive and help with verification. Stood around, got
reaquainted, did check in quite a few trailer today. Our friends from Calgary arrived, stood around with
us till about 3:45 when we all finally got parked for the rally. It's cloudy, drizzly and cold 48 degrees.

Get ready for a Good Time...we have planned a Welcome picnic, Wine & Cheese Tasting,Entertainment,light breakfasts,a sat nite sit down meal, tours all over the area. The final details are being planned for the next couple months. We already have 12 rigs signed up so far...see the coupon in the Blue Beret. The Summer Swing is under way. The High Plains Drifter is now in situate in the 7,000 ft. Davis Mts. astride the Trans-Pecos Plateau, 500 miles west of Dallas, 200 miles east of El Paso, and 80 miles north of the Mexican border. And the stars are out here. Mt. Locke is the home of the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, and the nearby Prude Ranch is hosting the annual Texas Star Party. Enjoy the pics. I'm particularly pleased with the grip and greet photo with Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, on Hawaiian shirt day at the Star Party. Brother Guy is a graduate of MIT, and the Keeper of the Pope's Vatican City State meteorite collection. His presentation that evening titled "Pluto and Planets X: Is Pluto a Planet? We have arrived home after several weeks of Airstream travel. We spent 4 weeks in Key Largo, kayaking and bike riding. On the way down we stopped at Land Yacht Harbor in Melbourne, FL, ran into Bill and Joan who suggested that we might enjoy Grayton Beach State Park in the Florida panhandle. We did. Maybe it wasn't the smartest choice to see the panhandle in the coldest winter in 20 years but we enjoyed it anyway. The kayaking was good, the bike riding was wonderful. There is a paved multi-use trail which runs for miles, we rode 10 miles in each direction on different days. We especially enjoyed riding around looking at the awesome architecture in the towns of Watercolor, Seaside, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach, some of which also had bike trails. On our way to the panhandle, we went kayaking with friends in Ichetucknee Springs where six manatees joined us and I managed to get an underwater photo. As we headed home, we diverted our trip to stay 3 nights in Top of Georgia, a WBCCI Airstream Park, where we will definitely visit again. While there, we hiked in Tallulah Gorge State Park, all 1,099 steps down and back! Looking forward to seeing everyone in Indian Rock in a couple of weeks!

Bogart - Col. Lea M. Boyer, U.S. Army Ret., 91, died Friday, February 12, 2010. Born in Catawissa, Pa., he was the son of the late Arthur and Jessie Boyer. Lea began his 30 year career during WWII in the U.S. Army and retired as the Commander of all U.S. Army dentists in Europe and Africa. He served in eight states and three foreign countries during his career. Survivors include his wife, Anne Boyer; two children, Patricia Boyer of Cortez, Colo., and Mary (Richard) Turner of Watkinsville, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Conor and Bonnie Turner.Services will be held at a later date in Catawissa, Pa. Memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10305; or the Michael J. Fox Foundation, P.O. Box 780, New York, NY 10008-0780. Lord & Stephens, WEST, is in charge of arrangements.

Lea Boyer passed away on Feb.12,2010 in Georgia. This is all the info I have, as I recieve more I will post it.
My Thoughts..... Lea & Anne met us at the York Rally(1990) and took us under their arm and care for the entire weekend. Making sure we were having fun..We did the road rally search and as Lea as driver, me as co-pilot.. Anne and Carol as backseat navigators, We traveled York County looking for answers to road questions along the way. Later at the evening ceromonies we were sworn in by "Stubby" Region 2 Pres. and Lea and Anne were by our side. Oh Yes!! We also won the Road Rally..Yea Lea and the gang!! What a sweet couple to carry us into the Airstream World of Travel..
Then Lea became President for the 1992 year ..what a leader!! Anne was there to guide him along the way! We went on a caravan to Canada taking 4 days to get there. We went to The Statue of Liberty Rally Too. Then The International was in Dayton,OH. That year. On a Caravan to Ohio with other Presidents from the Region , Lea offered to cut the watermelon snack one day, would you believe he cut right thru the fellow caravaner's table cloth...lots of laughs there. There were so many special memories of the Boyers that year. 21 club members went to Ohio, thats alot compared to today's count.
I for one will miss the Boyers in the club, the SWEETEST COUPLE ..I know!! God Bless Lea ...and be with Anne during this time! Dennis & Carol Ober #2590

Here is Audrey & Ken Landvater ,The hard working members that set up the winter get togethers.Audrey is also our Unit Treasurer. Today,January 23 , we traveled to Jumbo Buffet in Harrisburg. There was our Penna. Members that stayed home this winter. Jacobs, Leitners, Obers, Mauds, Landvaters & Theresa Davis. 6 bars of food was at our choice, seafood,salads,chinese,american foods, desserts, yum -yum, all you can eat for $7.95...wow what a bargan!!! We arrived at 1pm and stayed till 3:30pm..eat,chat,eat,chat...I think we were just glad to get out of the house. Carol even made it to the dinner, she said she also needed to get out of the house...4 weeks cooped up is long enough.

Mauds talked about their Around the World Trip (2007)on the Queen Mary Maiden Voyage...WOW.. what a fun trip, 3 months aboard ship, 21 ports of call. It was sure nice to see Don & Ruth Maud again, Don just turned 85 and Looks Great!! Ruth looks great too!!

ENJOYING Key Largo !!!

We are having great fun! On the way down, we stopped for two nights at Land Yacht Harbor and visited with Bill and Joan Bucher and Jackie Meredith. 2009 Christmas Party/Dinner at the Ranch House on Dec.20. here is the gang..Obers,Jacobs,Bates,Olshefski,Davis,Sanders,Lights & Landvaters. Our table favors were Christmas bags filled with Hershey small candy bars and also we recieved a book mark with 2010 calendar on it, all supplied by Sue Bates. The new membership books were passed out to everyone too. (If you were not here the books will be mailed to you.) We had a nice dinner, we all ordered off the menu and were served very quickly.The Food was delicious and then you picked dessert off the cart. Carl passed around a Christmas Game..you pick the words to fill in and also he passed out a Christmas Poem. We had alot of small talk and ended the Christmas party 2 hours later. Many Thanks to Carl & Jackie Light for Hosting this party. I know there were many changes to this day till it finally arrived and they did a GREAT JOB!!!! Merry Christmas to all Central Penn Unit Members!!!! See you at the next rally......

We drove about 5 miles to the Group Welcome Center at the gate to the Biltmore America’s largest house and got entrance assignment for 9:30 am. We proceeded through the large arched brick gateway and followed the road to the Welcome Center a large place that served as the temporary house while the Mansion was being built. We already had our discounted tickets from AAA so the gate attended told us to go straight ahead to the Biltmore House. A long 5 mile drive through the lush woods that were laid out by Frederick Law Olmstead the same man that designed Central Park in New York City. Originally the plantation was 125,000 acres now just a mere 8,000 acres. The walk from the parking lot to the mansion was 8 minutes according to the sign. We approached from the long court yard and walked to an elevated walkway to get a grand view of the mansion from 1,000 feet. The fountains were silent but the majesty of the view of the mountains in the background was just grand and hard to put into words. The 250 room house covers 4 acres under roof. There are 43 bathrooms, a bowling alley and an indoor heated and lighted swimming pool 10 feet deep. We entered the mansion at 9:00 am and we rented the audio head sets for $10.00 each. There were 55 stops on the tour covering 4 floors above and one floor below. The large glass conservatory was decorated with long strands of garland and a large Christmas tree on each of the 55 stops. The one guide told us that they used over 5 miles of garland throughout the mansion. The large Banquet Hall had a 40ft Christmas tree fully decorated. When the tree is not in place the dining table is 40 feet long. The three large fire places seem to be as big as car garages. We saw Sculptures, fountains, fixtures and furniture from all over the world. Everything was a piece of art. Tapestries re-constructed on a 100 year old loom in Lyon, France. It took us about 2 hours to take the audio tour. We ate lunch at the Stable Café a very unique experience. After checking out the toy store, the gift shop, the confectionery and more, we walked the gardens and viewed the roses and the acres of dormant gardens. The green houses were loaded with colorful plants to many to remember but bright colors were everywhere. I rested on a terrace overlooking the gardens before climbing back up the 200 steps to the main grounds. Joan got lots of pictures and a few of Barbie at the mansion. Next we drove another three mile on the paved road way winding around the farm land along the river and through the woods over custom stone bridges. We could see biking and walking trails along the way. We stopped at the Biltmore Winery and got another tour then tasting and then purchasing. Tired we headed home stopped for gas paid $2.63. The Biltmore is still owned and operated by the family and they are still preserving, restoring and maintaining the estate from revenue from tickets sales. The Christmas trees all 55 of them plus the many other decorations was a real sight to see and we would recommend it. Just be sure to make reservations in advance as they are sold out Fri. Sat. & Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend. Decorations are up until January 6th.

The Winter ramble is under way and finds me seaside midway between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, deep in the land of the Gullahs ( famous Gullahs, Jim Brown, Joe Frazier, and Clarence Thomas). The port of call is Edisto Beach and its cozy state park under the shade of live oaks dripping with Spanish Moss and groves of Palmettos, with the breaking waves of the Atlantic at the front door and a tidal marsh outback. The diet is naturally enough seafood, fresh shrimp and oysters predominate; but is nicely balanced with BBQ from Po Pigs' served up by Robert E. "Bobo" Lee himself. The birding is excellent, with another chance to finally add a Red-cockaded woodpecker to the life list. And for the sunny days there's cycling down the long, level back roads through the tunnels of over arching live oaks, or paddling the endless tidal creeks of the the vast ACE estuary. Do enjoy your Thanksgiving, and may your birds be full of fresh oysters. John Strawser
