The Biltmore at night
Bill & Joan inside the Biltmore

The entrance gate at the Biltmore

Barbie is at the Biltmore Too!!!

Joan & Bill enjoying the grounds at the Biltmore!!!!

We drove about 5 miles to the Group Welcome Center at the gate to the Biltmore America’s largest house and got entrance assignment for 9:30 am. We proceeded through the large arched brick gateway and followed the road to the Welcome Center a large place that served as the temporary house while the Mansion was being built. We already had our discounted tickets from AAA so the gate attended told us to go straight ahead to the Biltmore House. A long 5 mile drive through the lush woods that were laid out by Frederick Law Olmstead the same man that designed Central Park in New York City. Originally the plantation was 125,000 acres now just a mere 8,000 acres. The walk from the parking lot to the mansion was 8 minutes according to the sign. We approached from the long court yard and walked to an elevated walkway to get a grand view of the mansion from 1,000 feet. The fountains were silent but the majesty of the view of the mountains in the background was just grand and hard to put into words. The 250 room house covers 4 acres under roof. There are 43 bathrooms, a bowling alley and an indoor heated and lighted swimming pool 10 feet deep. We entered the mansion at 9:00 am and we rented the audio head sets for $10.00 each. There were 55 stops on the tour covering 4 floors above and one floor below. The large glass conservatory was decorated with long strands of garland and a large Christmas tree on each of the 55 stops. The one guide told us that they used over 5 miles of garland throughout the mansion. The large Banquet Hall had a 40ft Christmas tree fully decorated. When the tree is not in place the dining table is 40 feet long. The three large fire places seem to be as big as car garages. We saw Sculptures, fountains, fixtures and furniture from all over the world. Everything was a piece of art. Tapestries re-constructed on a 100 year old loom in Lyon, France. It took us about 2 hours to take the audio tour. We ate lunch at the Stable CafĂ© a very unique experience. After checking out the toy store, the gift shop, the confectionery and more, we walked the gardens and viewed the roses and the acres of dormant gardens. The green houses were loaded with colorful plants to many to remember but bright colors were everywhere. I rested on a terrace overlooking the gardens before climbing back up the 200 steps to the main grounds. Joan got lots of pictures and a few of Barbie at the mansion. Next we drove another three mile on the paved road way winding around the farm land along the river and through the woods over custom stone bridges. We could see biking and walking trails along the way. We stopped at the Biltmore Winery and got another tour then tasting and then purchasing. Tired we headed home stopped for gas paid $2.63. The Biltmore is still owned and operated by the family and they are still preserving, restoring and maintaining the estate from revenue from tickets sales. The Christmas trees all 55 of them plus the many other decorations was a real sight to see and we would recommend it. Just be sure to make reservations in advance as they are sold out Fri. Sat. & Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend. Decorations are up until January 6th.

Here is John Strawser enjoying the South!!! Have Fun John!!!

The Winter ramble is under way and finds me seaside midway between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, deep in the land of the Gullahs ( famous Gullahs, Jim Brown, Joe Frazier, and Clarence Thomas). The port of call is Edisto Beach and its cozy state park under the shade of live oaks dripping with Spanish Moss and groves of Palmettos, with the breaking waves of the Atlantic at the front door and a tidal marsh outback. The diet is naturally enough seafood, fresh shrimp and oysters predominate; but is nicely balanced with BBQ from Po Pigs' served up by Robert E. "Bobo" Lee himself. The birding is excellent, with another chance to finally add a Red-cockaded woodpecker to the life list. And for the sunny days there's cycling down the long, level back roads through the tunnels of over arching live oaks, or paddling the endless tidal creeks of the the vast ACE estuary. Do enjoy your Thanksgiving, and may your birds be full of fresh oysters. John Strawser

Audrey's Talent making Pumkin Spiders ....

Here it is October 14,2009 and our unit..Central Penn... is heading for Little Buffalo State Park. This is our annual Conservation Work project. This weekend there is a Fall Harvest Fest here at the Shoafs Mill with Apple Butter Making and Apple cider Demostrations thru out the Mill. We even made CornMeal and bagged it in 2lb bags to sell.

There are 8 Airstreams here, JoAnn & Felix Olshefski, Joan & Bill Bucher, Ken & Audrey Landvater, Milt & Theresa Davis, Steve & Linda Koreny, Carl & Jackie Light, Al & Jackie Chase(member at large, they may join our unit) and of course me ..Dennis "Obie" Ober. We arrived wed thru friday to camp and have fun together. Rain..Rain..Rain.. Thats all it did this week. There were 3 members coming that cancelled due to sickness, I don't blame them since it was Raining and damp all week. Lou Jacobs eneded up in the Hospital with puenomia(?) and we kept in touch with him all week, he had help set up this week and was upset that he wasn't there!!! Get Well Soon Lou!! and Take Care!!

We cleaned the dust bunnies off the mill walls and ceilings, women cleaned the windows & got the mill in shape for the weekend festival. One day the Rangers even made us Meatball subs for lunch. They were very glad to have us there for the week to help their shorthanded staff. In exchange we got one more rally in for the year and it was Free Camping, how can you beat that!!

Back at camp JoAnn O. made a turkey supper with all the fixins' and we brought the side dishes. Rain..Rain..Rain.. Did I say Rain? The Rangers left us use a banquet hall thursday nite to stay dry and enjoy our supper. We even fed him "Ben" A whole counter 20 feet long was filled with food, we didn't starve thats for sure!! Then we sat around to stay dry for a while. We did have campfires all week but It was Tough staying dry and warm.

On Saturday we headed over to the mill for the festival..Rain all day..the crowd was so thin..less than 50 attended. I think the volunteers out numbered the visitors!!! Sat nite we went to a local resturant in New Bloomfield (Curves Resturant) for a Dry Place to eat. We filled up the one side of the resturant..15 of us!! We all ordered our meals and enjoyed the meal. There was NO Fire Tonight...Rain!! Again !!! For a Rainy Week we sure kept our spirits up!! and had a lot of fun..There are No Bad Days when Camping!!

We helped again on sunday at the Mill...what is that glow in the sky!! Ah the Sun is peeking out and it is finally drying out. The Mill begins to get lots of visitors after lunch...here they come!!! We made all the apple cider and sold out of the corn meal 2 lb. bags $3.00/each. They had music both days however it was held indoors at the little building with a wood stove to take the chill off. The folk singers were great and entertaining.

I had to leave on sunday so I left early about 2pm for home, the Lights left also. The rest stayed till monday, We sure had a lot of fun and relaxing time this week and everyone pulled together to make it a Sucess. We were evn invited back next year to help for the 4th time... We'll be BACK!! See you down the road!! Obie

Here is Joan trying out to be a Green Bay Cheerleader!!! Notice all her fans in the stands!!! Blog next .....
Lambau Stadium is home for the Green Bay Packers NFL Football team. We stopped just outside of Green Bay for a pit stop and then continued in to Green Bay. Wow we could have parked 500 Airstream units and still had room for 500 more. The size of this place is the first thing that gets your attention. We made our way into the large complex to Curly’s Pub and had a delicious lunch. In the front entrance window I counter 1,000 windows each 4’ x 4’ and they had to long high lifts cleaning the windows one inside and one outside. The massive foyer is one half of a football field with grid lines imbedded in the colorful floor and the grid lines are parallel to the west end of the actual field. Our guide “Larry” first took us outside in front of the statues to explain that the 295 million dollar renovations in 2003 were done by the City of Green Bay. The stadium is owned by the city not the team. The stadium is more than a stadium it is used 365 days a year for conventions, birthday parties they had 36 weeding last year. They accommodate 450,000 visitors like us each year. Conventions and business meeting are held here continuously. There was a group using the 4th level that we did not get to see. The stadium has 7 levels on one side and 6 on the other, 168 box suites that rent out for 58,000 to 168,000 per season. General bench seats cost 58 to 158 dollars. There are over 8,000 people waiting to get seats, Of the 72,000 total seats only about 200 seats change hands each year. There are two very large statues in front of the massive building. One is of Curly Lambeau who started the Green Bay Packers in 1919. He was a star player and coach with record world wins. Vince Lombardi came along in 1960’s to again become one of the winningest coaches of all time. Our group rode the elevator to the 6th level where we were escorted to one of the 168 sky box suits. WOW what a view behind large glass windows. Our guide pointed out dozens of interesting facts about the new stadium completed in 2003. The original bench seats remained and the stadium seats were added and the 6 levels of sky boxes. He explained how they get rid of the snow by shoveling to the isles that have metal sheets that form a shut down to the field where high loaders load the snow onto dump trucks that haul it away. Green Bay has a population of 102,000. The stadium holds 72,000. We got to go down to the field level and walk through the tunnel where the players come out onto the field and they played the sound of a large crowd cheering as we approached the field. We then sat at field level behind the goal post uprights and could get a feeling of the size of this football shaped stadium. After our tour we then checked out the Packers Hall of Fame, Curly’s Game Zone, Curly’s Pub, Frozen In Time Ice-Cream Parlor, Packers Pro Shop, and the Extra Points Store. Our 5 Airstreams were all parked in a neat row in one corner of the large parking lot.

Here is Joan Bucher Flying backwards??? I guess she wants to see where she has been??

Bill & Joan Bucher are on a caravan checking out the Light Houses around Wisconsin...Looks like Fun!!

Here's some shots from John Strawser on his Trip to New Brunswick
It has stopped raining, actually some time ago, and I've busied myself grazing on the surf and turf, wonderful grass fed beef and just off the boat lobster, with mussels and oysters for appetizers. Then I paddle and peddle in the morning the next morning, with the afternoon devoted to massive intakes of vitamin C on the sands. Life's very good here. See the pix from the Wolfschanze. John
